Experience
My journey to become a tutor in Chinese has been one of focus, determination, and commitment. I was fortunate to have teachers who provided me with encouragement, guidance, and confidence in my abilities. This began in high school with my teacher Mr. Chen, who told me that I could learn Mandarin if I worked hard enough and took a disciplined approach. When I began attending college, I continued my quest to learn the language. The difficulty increased, and I often thought of quitting. Fortunately, my instructor suggested I take a full immersion approach and spend a year in Beijing. I took a chance and made the trip. Twelve months later, my fluency level was high. When I came back to the United States, I was accepted into Ohio State's Chinese Flagship Program. It was in this program that I increased my understanding of Chinese media, short stories, culture, and history. At this point, I knew that the passion I had for Chinese should be focused on tutoring and teaching. For me, helping others learn Chinese is a way I can honor everyone who played a role in my journey. I am enrolled in a graduate program at Brandeis University that develops students to teach Chinese. I have also taught classes in the language at Boston Latin School. As a fluent, non-native speaker, I understand the fine grammar points and the overall process of learning the language. I think every student can learn Chinese. I am committed to helping them succeed and will provide the right balance of guidance and discipline.
