Experience
I received my Ph.D. in neuroscience from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in 2013, and have spent the past three years as a Postdoctoral Fellow at Harvard University studying the neurodegenerative disorder ALS. As a tutor, I’ve found that students show the highest potential to retain information when they have a strong conceptual foundation of the subject matter from which to build their knowledge. Thus, my approach is to explain the material from the ground up, using real world examples whenever possible, in order to establish a strong basis for future successful learning. As someone with a Ph.D. in the life sciences, I have a deeper understanding of biology than most, and can therefore explain complex concepts in a simplified and relevant manner. Additionally, I cater my teaching technique to the needs of the student depending on what type of learner they are (visual, verbal, etc.). A second facet of my teaching philosophy is based on the importance of building a personal relationship with each student so that they feel comfortable approaching me with questions and concerns. With an easy-going, nonjudgmental attitude, I encourage students to be themselves, and make it clear that they should never feel embarrassed if they don’t understand something. Although I have a doctorate, I’ve found that most students have an easy time relating to me.
